Welcome to Our English Department
Our students study a varied and vibrant curriculum throughout Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 and we are justly proud of our department’s results, which are consistently one of the school’s best. Over 70% of our students achieve a C or more at GCSE. Our aim in the department is to get all pupils in the school to experience the enjoyment of reading, to understand the power of language and to use words effectively themselves. The teachers constantly strive to make lessons stimulating and enjoyable, encouraging students to make choices about the ways they learn and setting realistic yet challenging targets for themselves. We try to provide real life situations for using English skills wherever possible.
Skills and Values
Throughout all Key Stages, the English courses develop the key skills of reading, writing and speaking and listening which are required across the entire school curriculum. We are keen to select a variety of strategies and a range of different texts to ensure all pupils receive a dynamic and challenging delivery of the curriculum. In addition to these key areas, the department strives to develop other skills, such as the imagination, social awareness and interaction.
English is a successful and popular subject taught by thirteen committed English specialists who have access to a wealth of resources. Each of the dedicated teaching rooms are equipped with data projectors and PCs, two of which have recently been fitted with interactive whiteboards, and the department also has a dedicated set of laptops to further support the excellent teaching and learning. We also work closely with the school’s well equipped Lawther Library to encourage wider reading and research.
